4.1.1 Introduction Module 4 ‘Designing the River’

Course subject(s) Module 4. Designing the River

Next to water safety, is ‘Spatial Quality‘ a second main goal of the Dutch Room-for-the-River program. So, in this module we will focus on this objective.

Similar to civil engineering and governance, spatial design has a vital role in river projects because rivers have a large spatial extent and impact. People would say design is a luxury, superfluous. Solving these complex and even wicked problems is hard enough. Let’s not make things even more complicated, will be the intuition of most project managers.

However, we learned in the Room-for-the-River program that the design, when positioned well in a project and adequately practiced, can produce better results and help stay within the budget and make us able to implement the program in time. In this module we share experiences from the Room for the River Project along with spatial design to show you how that can work. In the next video professor Dirk Sijmons will give you a short introduction to this module.

Learning objectives module 4

  • To discover the potential role of landscape design to accommodate various societal functions, including water safety, over short- and long-term time horizons
  • To understand what spatial design can do
  • To know the definition of spatial quality as used in the room for the river programme
  • To explore potential design considerations
  • To consider trade-offs in spatial designs by making a rank of your considerations
