4.2.2. Arjan Conijn on balancing challenges

Course subject(s) 4. In troubled waters: What challenges are water systems facing?

Finding solutions to challenges is not always straightforward. Dutch engineer Arjan Conijn talks about how water challenges never stand alone.

Different functions or land use sometimes require opposite approaches to water management in the same city or rural area. The increased occurrence of extreme rainfall and peak waters in rivers mean that a surplus of water can turn into shortage within a short period of time. For the institutions responsible for water management it can be hard to strike the right balance between either holding on to water or draining it!
