4.2.3 Waste separation at companies, a pratical approach

Course subject(s) Module 4. Collection systems

To separately collect products that contain critical raw materials in large organisations such as companies, the collection must cover all recyclable and reusable materials. In this video Jan-Henk Welink discusses the practical side of waste separation within companies.

Main takeaways

  • For waste separation of products containing critical raw materials as WEEE, one must look at all of the materials in the company; with less residual waste, WEEE stands out more. Collecting usable materials from waste is in line with the attitude and the subjective norm of employees.
  • To set up waste separation in your company you:
    • First measure the amount of recyclable materials, also looking at bought products; they give an insight into the waste that will be formed.
    • Make a collection plan, but consider reuse and prevention of waste first before calling recyclers.
    • One colleague is responsible for the waste separation and its plan and she/he is supported by management.
    • Always ask colleagues how to make separate waste collection more convenient.
