4.5.2 Municipals successful in waste separation

Course subject(s) Module 4. Collection systems

Pieter Reus is a consultant on the transition from waste to resource. One of his activities is helpingĀ municipals with their waste management following a different and promising approach: service oriented collection. In this video Pieter explains service oriented collection and its results.

Main takeaways

  • Service oriented collection focuses on the return of resources and raising the service level for citizens.
  • The basic difference between this type of collection and traditional waste collection is its focusing on the moment of disposal, and making it very easy to separate collection waste at this moment. Communicating in colours of the waste bins here is important, as this helps reaching people’s subconscious level.
  • In service oriented collection WEEE is collected as “stuff” and not as waste. WEEE is collected in a box, with other “stuff” for re-use. In trails most WEEE was not reusable but could be refurbished or repaired.
