This lecture gives an introduction to the course and gives information about different uses of the hydrological cycle. The lecture focuses on the following aspects:

•  The explanation of the hydrological cycle on different scales;
•  Estimating the different terms in a water balance;
•  Understanding a catchment as the hydrological unit;
•  Influence of man on the hydrological cycle;
•  A review of hydrological data handling.
