Lecture 6: Backcasting

Product Service Systems

What is backcasting? Backcasting differs from forecasting whereas it takes the future result as a starting point and thinking backwards, instead of working from the current to the future situation. In backcasting, first a sustainable future is designed after which the path towards the realization is determined. Not just the final result but the path towards it is especially important in backcasting. This lecture will explain the concepts and methods of backcasting and will present a five-step approach.
