1.1 and 1.2 Introduction, learning objectives and content available in full course

Course subject(s) 1. Satellite Bus Platform

Introduction

We will start with the brains and nerves of a spacecraft: command and data handling. This is the major topic for this week. We will also look at structures, mechanisms and thermal control in brief.

At the end of this week, you will be able to discuss about onboard computers and data busses with professionals and understand the needs and basics for the other topics.

In the class session I will show you some real hardware and discuss it interactively. We will then also discuss the questions you might have and do a group discussion and excercise.

Kind regards,

Jasper Bouwmeester

Learning objectives/outcomes

By the end of this learning unit, you will be able to:

  • Explain the objective and  functions of a command and data handling subsystem.
  • Reproduce and explain the basic requirements for structures and deployment mechanisms.
  • Analyze and explain failure root causes and effects.
  • List the technology options for structures and thermal control and describe their working principle.
  • Interpret key characteristics and explain design aspects of data busses and onboard computers.

Learning Activities (to do’s)

  • Watch the lecture videos
  • Read the lecture notes (optional: content similar to videos)
  • Perform the excercises associated to each video.
  • Attend the class session (at least watch all videos before)

Additional material in full course

  • Two more video lectures on Mechanism and Thermal Control
  • Exercise quizzes for each video lecture
