2.2.3 Reading material for Urban Development Policies and Markets

Course subject(s) 2. Urban Development Management

Reading material 2.2

To get a better understanding of the urban development policies and the real estate market that influence the (re)development and building adaptation of our case study location, we have gathered some essential reading material for you. Have fun with studying the Rotterdam context!

Policy documents

As there are no recent English versions of the urban planning and development policy in Rotterdam, we included a summary of the Rotterdam Spatial Development Strategy 2030, published in 2007. For your reference, it is good to know that the ‘Stationskwartier’ (mentioned on page 10 and 11 in the VIP area map) corresponds with Rotterdam Central District.

In addition, we have selected two relevant policy documents related to urban sustainability. These sustainability policy documents are quite recent and indicate the current emphasis on developing and planning the city in a more resilient and sustainable way. You don’t need to read every detail of these documents, just scan through the policies to get a first impression.

Real estate market documents

In order to perform a real estate market analysis, you often have to look for multiple documents developed by a number of institutions. This data is often quite scattered on the internet. Here, we made a selection of the main overall data on the Dutch/Rotterdam office, retail and housing markets. Of course, you can search for extra information and data on the internet.

In addition, note that there are no overall figures/documents on Rotterdam’s real estate market function of hospitality. Hospitality functions typically consist of hotels, restaurants, and other leisure-related activities.
