2.3.1 Lecture summary: Affordable housing in China

Course subject(s) 2. Housing Provision and Management

What you will learn in this lecture

This lecture first evaluates the trends of housing development in China between 1949 and 2015. It then introduces the dynamic roles of the state, the local municipalities and the real estate developers as they evolved along time in response to specific housing challenges. Three current initiatives – the “Governmental developers”, “Urban villages” and “Housing rental companies” – will be explained with the goal to shed some light on how the institutional transformation and marketization in China have affected and are affecting the society.
