2.4.1 Lecture summary: Public housing in Ghana

Course subject(s) 2. Housing Provision and Management

What you will learn in this lecture

State support is important to achieving decent and affordable housing, especially in developing countries. Normally, countries would directly produce or enable private and non-profit sectors to provide housing. In Ghana, the state has engaged directly in public housing production, but a weak management, among others, has led to declining quality. However, opportunities exist to reform the management approach, for instance, tenant involvement, alternative financing mechanisms, and engaging technical expertise. This lecture highlights some major weaknesses in Ghana’s public housing management and discusses opportunities for reform of the sector in order to achieve improved quality.
