References

When using information and literature from others, you need to acknowledge them and therefore reference this information adequately. After you know how you organise, you searched with help of your search plan and found some relevant and reliable information sources, it’s time to formulate an answer to your research question. You will use the found literature in your own work in one of the following ways:

  • substantiate your own statements
  • describe the context of your subject
  • give examples
  • show different opinions about your subject

You can use the information by quoting, paraphrasing or summarizing. This has previously been covered in Information literacy 1. In the TUlib module How to cite is explained how you can quote, paraphrase and summarize the used information. The TUlib module also explains which requirements a literature list must meet. Make sure to list the used sources of every quote, paraphrase, summary, image or photograph that you copy in a complete and correct literature list. It is mandatory to give credits to another’s work to avoid plagiarism.
