Module 4. Make up your mind
This online learning experience on Robots in Society is a spin-off of The Mind of the Universe documentary series created by the Dutch broadcasting company VPRO and professor Robbert Dijkgraaf, Princeton University. Other universities have also used the open source material of the documentary series as a starting point to create similar experiences. We encourage you to join another track! Genetic privacy: should we be concerned?
offered by Leiden University
Who owns your genetic data once it becomes publicly accessible? What is your responsibility to family members when you know more about genetic diseases than they do? Who decides what kind of genetic information is relevant to a person? And what does genetic privacy mean to you? These are questions that you will reflect upon in this online learning experience. More info here.
Should all our genetic information be made public in order to eradicate genetic diseases from this world?
Science in progress: how to formulate the right questions?
offered by Erasmus University Rotterdam
Can I find a solution to complex world problems before I have a well-considered question?
From Galileo Galilei discovering that the earth revolves around the sun to Charles Darwin’s finding on biological evolution: almost all research starts with a researcher wondering about a phenomenon and formulating a corresponding research question. However, the problem with formulating hypotheses is the ‘theory-ladenness of observation’: you see what you want to see. Science pushes against the limitations of the discipline, while creativity and thinking outside the box are the best ways to solve problems. More info here.
