1.3.1 Overview of cases

Course subject(s) Module 1. Sustainable urban freight systems around the world

In this section, we will learn how three different cities, Rotterdam, New Delhi and London deal with urban freight transport issues. Listen to how the cities and their challenges are described. All three cities have very different characteristics, in terms of the type and intensity of freight, the density of residences and commercial activity, the state of the transport network and even the capability of the freight transport sector. These characteristics have strong influences on the type and degree of urban freight problems and to the complexity of proposing and implementing solutions.

As you watch and read about these challenges, think about what and how your city is facing. It is helpful to bear in mind the “triple-bottom line” of economic, social and environmental impacts. At the end of the module, we want you to introduce your city and one of biggest challenges it is facing in terms of urban freight transport. More instruction will be provided then.
