The focus of the frist part of this book is on the forces which act upon rocks and the earth’s crust, and the response to those forces. After an introduction to the topic in chapter 1, in chapters 2-4 the forces which act upon rocks are clearly defined. Dimensions and magnitudes of the forces are tabulated in order to allow the reader to appreciate the scale. Chapters 5-8 cover elasticity, brittle behavior, ductile creep and viscosity and flow laws which all have to do with the reponse of the rock to forces or stress (rheology).
