6.3.2 The urban mine

Course subject(s) Module 6. Thinking in Systems

THE URBAN MINE

According to Ester, urban mines are available and accessible in each country. Urban mines are above ground stocks of metals – as opposed to the underground stocks of metal ores. In a Circular Economy, using our urban mines is a great way to access locally available metals and create a buffer against metal supply disruptions.

A railway track can be regarded as an urban mine. Abandoned railway tracks can be ‘mined’ for their high-quality steel rails.
