The first step is to create a clear structure in the content tool. Usually lecturers choose a week or a repository structure. In a week structure the content is organized per week. The lecture slides, activities, assignments are ordered per week. In the repository structure the content is organized per content type (a separate module for slides, assignments, reading, and so on). Choose one structure, and stick to it!

Once you’ve chosen the type of structure you want for you course, it’s time to create modules and submodules. Add them to the content tool. Don’t overdo it with the submodules. Usually 1 level of submodules is enough.

The next step is to add content. Add your PDF files, Word documents and Powerpoint files (support) and put them in the right module.

If you have any useful or interesting videos, add them to your modules. However, don’t add too much content, otherwise students might be overwhelmed. Some rules of thumb:

• Video: when students study a video they spend 3 times the duration of the video (they pauze, rewind and watch again). So a 5 minute video is 15 minutes of study-time.
• Reading: students can study 7 pages an hour (from a textbook or an article)

The next step is to add learning activities to your course. You can add learning activities like:

• Quizzes (support) or self-assessment (support)
• Assignments (support)
• Checklists (support)
• Discussion forums (support)
• Interactive documents or video (support)
• Project environment (support)

Each course has, by default, information from the study-guide. It’s not possible to edit this information (because it’s imported from the study guide), but you can add additional information using a Brightspace page. Review your course information and update the information.
