Introduction to Stability
On this page the assignments of the chapter Introduction to Stability can be found. Read the descriptions carefully and good luck.
Assignment 1
Find a positive definite expression for the potential energy (in terms of a single degree-of-freedom q) of a structure, which according to linearised analysis would be unstable.
Assignment 2
Given is a standard mass spring system.
- Investigate a quadratically (kx2) and cubically (kx3) nonlinear spring. Are they stable or unstable, and why?
- Show this graphically by plotting the time response of both types of nonlinear springs.
Assignment 3
Given is a functional I, see below. The subscripts with comma indicate the first or second derivative with respect to that variable. The functional I is a function of displacement fields u, vand w, and their first and second derivatives with respect to x and y.
Derive the equilibrium equations in u, v and w direction of the functional and find the boundary terms.
