11. Selection of Materials and Structure

Course subject(s) Structural Engineering Lectures

In this lecture Prof. Ir. R. Alderliesten talks about material and structure choice in design. He starts off by explaining how to derive the structural efficiency towards a certain design criterion. This structural efficiency involves expressing the design criteria in material properties, geometry and loads, so each can be optimized.

The second half of the lecture is dedicated to the dimensioning of a spacecraft structure.  Mechanical vibrations are introduced, and the role they play as a design criterion. An example system is broken down and rewritten for stiffness to show how a parameter can be found to choose a material with.
