3d. Examples of active teaching and learning

Course subject(s) 3. Active teaching and learning

Examples

Below are two videos containing examples of active teaching and learning. Choose one to watch (of course you’re more than welcome to watch both).

The video by Richard Felder shows very simple ways of getting students actively involved, which can be used by any teacher.

The video by David Black Schaeffer shows a method that makes use of supporting ICT tools.

Active learning with Dr. Richard Felder

In this video Dr. Richard M. Felder (Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University) shows how he activates students during his course. He also gives some valuable tips on how to make this way of teaching successful.

Active learning with David Black Schaeffer

In this video David Black Schaeffer, lecturer at Uppsala University, explains how and why he uses active teaching and learning. As you can see, this specific example is heavily ICT-based. ICT can be very helpful, but is in no way a requirement for active teaching and learning.

Overview of activating methods

Here you’ll find chapter 8 of ‘Instruction at FSU: a guide to teaching and learning practices’, a teacher handbook of Florida State University. It contains a large sampling of active teaching and learning techniques
