5.1.1 Recycling refrigerators

Course subject(s) Module 5. Waste = Food

Welcome to the fifth installment, this time on ‘Waste equals Food’. We begin this episode with a quick peek inside a recycling facility. Coolrec is specialized in the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment into high-quality recovered plastics, metals and other secondary raw material. This particular facility based in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, recycles refrigerators and washing machines. We take a closer look at Coolrec’s recycling process in unit 5.2.

The theme of this episode, Waste equals Food, is about the continuous cycling of materials and products. Ideally, in a Circular Economy we have closed loop nutrient systems – inspired by nature. Here, the ‘wastes’ of one process are the ‘nutrients’ for the other. This Waste equals Food principle is a source of inspiration for companies and designers, as you’ll see in this episode!
