Block 3: Contact Analysis part 2

Course subject(s) Block 3: Contact

This lecture continues the subject discussed in the previous lecture. This lecture video is not accompanied by slides. To illustrate the solving process of a numerical contact problem, the lecturer uses the theory taught in the first video of this block to solve a problem in writing on the blackboard while explaining his work. To facilitate fitting the material into one lecture the problem that is treated is a linear normal contact problem. However, it does illustrate the different methods used to enforce contact constraints.

The lecture starts by defining the problem and writing down the governing equations and constraints. The different methods for enforcing the contact constraint are introduced at 0:10:46. Three methods are explained in detail: the Langrange multiplier method (0:19:20), penalty approach (0:41:47), and the Nitsche method (0:59:12).
