2.5.1 Lecture: Power Electronics in Electric Cars

Course subject(s) Module 2. Battery Technology for EVs

When power flows from the battery to the electric motor, its voltage needs to be stepped up. How can this be achieved? You will find this out as Prof. Bauer explains the working of the boost converter and then combines the buck and the boost converters in a bi-directional converter for electric vehicles.

Learning goals for this lecture are:

        1. Explain the application of a boost converter in context of electric vehicles.
        2. Understand how a boost converter works.
        3. Explain the operating states of a boost converter.
        4. Derive the relationship between the input voltage and output voltage of a DC to DC boost converter in terms of duty cycle.
        5. Explain the working principle of a combination of the buck and boost converters?
