With a good understanding of wireless charging technology, let us now move onto understanding battery swap technology. People want quick charging of their EV batteries. Battery swap and fast DC charging provide this opportunity to quickly replenish the energy of the battery pack.
The battery swap is likely to remain the fastest way to refuel an electric vehicle. When the batteries are low, the entire pack is taken out and replaced with a fully charged one. This process can be done fully automatically in a switching bay in the order of a minute. The depleted batteries are charged in the station for later deployment.
Watch this lecture by Pavol Bauer to get an idea of what battery swap is and what are its advantages and disadvantages. Further, we will also look into the comparison of fast charging and battery swap in detail based on queuing theory. Finally, the lecture will conclude with two application examples of battery swap where fleet managers can use battery swap for quick recharge of EVs, especially for fixed route movement of vehicles.
