Salinity in estuaries

Course subject(s) 4. Salinity in estuaries

Lecturer: Prof.dr.ir. Savenije

This lecture deals with the tidal dynamics in estuaries and describes the processes in estuaries related to salt intrusion. The tidal dynamics will be dealt with using the contents of the book ‘salinity and tides in alluvial estuaries’ written by Hubert H.G. Savenije.

The part of the tidal dynamics focuses mainly of the effect of taking into account the phase lag.

The part of the lecture about salt water intrusion focuses on:

  • The effect of the combination of the tide and a river discharge;
  • Mixing in estuaries;
  • Transport mechanisms for salt in estuaries;
  • Other sources of salt water intrusion.
