Chapter 02: Physical Quantities and Continua
Course subject(s)
Part 1: Mechanics and Rheology
In order to apply mechanical theories to rock deformation, knowledge of the units and magnitude of the physical quantities are of importance. Fundamental quantities and their physical units, SI-units and metric number names are therefore outlined. Next to the scale of these quantities, also the time scale of geological processes is briefly emphasized. The difference between scalar, vector and tensor quantities is summarized. Finally the continuum assumptions and its limitations are elaborated upon.
