Chapter 05: Elasticity

Course subject(s) Part 1: Mechanics and Rheology

The basic principles of rock geology start with understanding why sometimes a rock fractures in a brittle fashion and in another situation flows in a ductile fashion. One of the parameters having influence on this mechanical response of rocks is the rock elasticity. In this chapter therefore, mechanical models for simulating elastic behavior, elastic moduli and stress-strain and strain-time graphs are introduced. Finally practical applications of crustal stress calculations are outlined.
