Chapter 09: Mathematical Review

Course subject(s) Part 2: Tensors and Deformation Analysis

Much deformation modeling involves mathematical expressions. In this chapter, some of the principal mathematical methods used for describing the mechanics of rock deformation are reviewed. This involves the essentials of ordinary and partial differentials of scalar quantities, partial differentials operating on vector quantities, differential equations, integration, tensors and matrices and determinant operations. The chapter is ended with a brief overview of complex variables and complex functions.
