2.0.1 Introduction: Battery Technology for EVs

Course subject(s) Module 2. Battery Technology for EVs

Welcome to module 2 of this course!

In this module we will learn about the Battery Technologies for EVs. The idea is to give you a simple understanding of the working principle of a battery. You will learn about some important parameters which influence the performance of batteries. Besides the chemical reactions inside the battery, you will find out how a careful choice of electrode and electrolyte material is important to ensure a long life for batteries. While we deal mostly with the example of Li-ion batteries which are the state of the art for EVs today, we hope you can use the knowledge gained in this module to evaluate the pros and cons of different battery technologies proposed for EVs.

This module includes two lectures on DC to DC converters. These converters ensure the voltage is stepped up or down while transferring power between the battery and the electric motor. We will explain how these converters work and how they are relevant for EVs. With this module, we’ve also updated the glossary of terms. You can download it below.

And now, let’s dive straight into the content. Hope you have a successful learning experience!
