Engineering structures are a compromise between structural performance/capability and constraints on the system they are contained within.
Structural performance/capability is a function of:
- Properties of materials used in the structural design
- Geometrical features and dimensional aspects of that particular structure
This is aside from any manufacturing aspects that must also be considered.
