6.2.2 Lecture: Safety Design Philosophies

Module 6. Certification, Fatigue, and Durability
There are three primary design philosophies that are used with respect to fatigue and durability of aircraft structures: Safe Life, Fail Safe, and Damage Tolerance. In this lecture, these three philosophies will be introduced and some examples of their use will be explored.
