Lecture 1: Introduction and Relevant Oceanography

Course subject(s) 1. Introduction and Relevant Oceanography

In this introduction lecture the general purpose and importance of Acoustic Remote Sensing and Seafloor mapping is given: why is Remote Sensing used and what is the difference with other types of waves? Engineers, who for example are planning to build an offshore wind mill park, require accurate seafloor information. This information is gathered using several techniques which are also discussed in this lecture.

This presentation about Relevant Oceanography is the first step to Seafloor Mapping. The ocean is the acoustic propagation medium for seafloor mapping techniques. To be able to map the seafloor, knowledge about the state of the surface, the oceanic properties and the topography and composition of the seafloor is needed. All these aspects and the variables are discussed in this part of the lecture. Chapter one of the reader is downloadable in Readings.
