This lecture consists of two parts: one about precipitation and one about discharge. The relation between these processes will also dealt with.

The part about precipitation focuses on the following subjects:

• Different types of precipitation;
• Precipitation formation processes;
• Precipitation parameters;
• Measurement techniques for precipitation;
• Areal estimation of precipitation.

The part about discharge focuses on the following subjects:

• Discharge measurements;
• Interpreting the catchment response – discharge;
• Hydrograph analysis;
• Effective precipitation and simple methods to estimate peak discharge.
