This lecture deals with three different subjects:

• The calculation of crop water requirements, possible time intervals to distribute this water and the consequences for the canals;
• The role of structures in an irrigation system;
• Possible main lay-outs of an irrigation system and an overview which choices should be made when designing an irrigation system.

The subjects will be illustrated with two different examples: the Nevada Irrigation District and the Elche system in Spain.
