1.2.1 Introduction to materials under load

Course subject(s) Module 1. Introduction to Aerospace Structures and Materials

Constant Material Behavior?

In the previous section, we concluded our last lecture by giving the definition of isotropic materials: materials with identical properties in all directions. This may give rise to the question of whether material properties are constant or not.

This section will provide an answer to this question and introduce you to the testing machines in our laboratory. We will also discuss, how we can best make use of material properties when designing our aircraft or spacecraft.

As they say: “when the going gets tough, the tough get going“. Thus, we will finish out with a discussion the toughness of materials.
