2.0.1 Introduction to Materials and Manufacturing

Course subject(s) Module 2. Materials and Manufacturing Methods

Now that you have learned about the basics of material science and the principles of stress and strain, let’s dive a little further into the world of aerospace structures and materials and take a look at materials and how they are manufactured.

This module consists of 4 sections:

  1. Aerospace Materials and their Applications
  2. Characteristics of Aerospace Materials
  3. Manufacturing Methods for Metals
  4. Manufacturing Methods for Composites

At the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the different groups of materials used in aerospace
  • Describe the characteristics of the main aerospace materials
  • Estimate composite material properties based on its constituent properties
  • Describe the three main manufacturing categories in metals and list the typical processes for each
  • Describe the typical manufacturing processes for composites
