3.2.4 Main Takeaways on Structural Concepts

Course subject(s) Module 3. Aerospace Structures

Trusses are hardly used anymore as primary structures for fuselage or wings. They are still used within the aircraft or spacecraft to transfer loads, such as in ribs or center sections.

Sheet material is now the preferred concept as it can carry multiple loads:

  • tension
  • compression
  • shear
  • out-of-plane loading to seal a structure
