3.3.1 Introduction to Stiffened Shells

Course subject(s) Module 3. Aerospace Structures

As we have seen, aircraft structures have evolved from trusses to sheet material. But how do we ensure that the sheet material can take on all the different loads? This section focuses on how sheet material is stiffened using stiffeners or by using the approach of monocoque structure. To show you engineering is more than just science, Hannah Hypothesis also makes another appearance and will show you how you can design your own stiffened structure!
