Data Management

Course subject(s) 5. Project Management

During your thesis you will be managing a lot of data. Next to ensuring you comply with Data laws it is also important that you manage your data and are able to retrieve previous versions of your work.

Data organisation

  • Create a clear and consistent folder structure
  • Force yourself to have good version control and back up habits
  • Create a ReadMe.txt file for your folder structure
  • Keep record of meetings and agreements with supervisors and others

Version Control

  • Whenever you make changes to a file ensure you regularly save it under a new file name (min. once a day!)
  • Keep accurate logfiles and logbooks on changes you make
  • Check with your supervisor if you can use GitLab when coding

Back Up

  • If you store your work within the TU Delft network it is in principal automatically back up by TU Delft ICT. Be aware however, that because of the timings of the back ups you may not be able to recover the full 100% of your work.
  • Use the 3-2-1 rule of data storage: 3 copies, 2 storage media, 1 copy in a different physical location. Do keep in mind the rules regarding data storage mentioned in week 3 and be aware that loose data carriers can get corrupted, or lost and may not be a reliable as they seem! Contact your data steward for more information on secure cloud services that meet current legal requirements if you need help.
