Case 2014

The Assignment 2014

The assignment for 2014 reads: develop “community integrated streetfurniture systems” for the ‘Gillisbuurt’, a community in Delft consisting of approx. 500 households, 60 % unemployment, multi culti, 78% immigrants/allochtones , 50% Dutch speaking, lack of social cohesion and safety, etc.  to enhance social cohesion. Teams of IO students work for existing companies that are selected on their commitment to build prototypes for testing social impact in Delft in the years after. Some results of course 2013 have already been realised (see Case 2013) and some projects are going to be realised the coming years. The course is a “research, design & realise” course project since the ultimate challenge of the course is providing companies with streetfurniture designs elaborated to the level of construction drawings for prototype building. The course seeks proactive students that want to make a social change!

The Gillisbuurt

The context for this years assignment is the Gillisbuurt, one of the districts of the Buitenhof in Delft. The assignment of last year was conducted in the Rode Dorp. Both districts are underpriviliged quarters with low levels of social cohesion. Especially between the different groups. The housing coorporation is eager to help organise pilot projects with promising design projects. The local mosque provides a introduction lecture in the mosque about the background of muslims in the district and the challenges in this multi-culti setting.

Multi disciplinairy context / Inspirational Workshops

In the project IDE students have inspirational brainstormsessions with students from Psychology (Erasmus University) and/or Anthropology (Leiden University) and/or Sociology (Utrecht University). The Human Science students provide feedback to the Design students in workshops coached by a multi disciplinairy team expert.

Animation students from the Willem de Kooning academy Rotterdam will have 3 sessions with the Design teams for their assignment to make animation films the 3-i design process. The artstudents give feedback on the ideas of the design students at their work in progress and vise versa. The art students will show their films at the final presentation in Theater de Veste at the Wise Owl Event.

Final Presentation: Theater de Veste in Delft

The end-presentation / ‘wise owl award’ event takes place in Theater de Veste in Delft for students, the companies, the district coordination teams but also for the Delft public. Wise Owl Awards are handed out by the Gillisbuurt jury (chairman Mo). There will be 2 awards:
