Module 1: Complexity of Infrastructure
This module, we first discussed complexity in general: what is it and what consequences does it have. Then, we showed what the socio-technical complexity of infrastructure entails.
Next, we intend to explain how all this complexity can create unanticipated behaviour that makes a system virtually unmanageable. We will do this drawing on a concrete example: Germany’s so-called Energy Transition.
The story of the German Energy Transition is a spectacular example that shows the complexity of infra-systems. It shows how the earthquake in Japan triggered a virtual earthquake in the European electricity system!
