Learning objectives for module 1 and 2

After module 1 and 2, you will understand:

• Why infrastructures are social-technical systems and the huge implications for addressing infrastructural problems.
• The main concepts and ‘jargon’ that we will use during this course.
• The major driving forces with respect to the development of infrastructures.
• The increasing complexity of infrastructure systems, caused by expansion and interconnection of infrastructure systems, across national borders and across the borders between infrastructure sectors.

Getting to know the concepts

Why are infrastructures considered to be ‘socio-technical systems’? In this web lecture, Margot Weijnen will introduce some basic concepts within the framework of infrastructure systems and its complexity. We will also describe why infrastructures are often known as ‘complex adaptive systems’.
