In dit college worden twee gevallen van expansie in zuigers behandeld: reversibele en irreversibele expansie. Vervolgens wordt het nieuwe concept van interne energie geïntroduceerd. Nu zijn alle concepten die te maken hebben met de eerste hoofdwet van de thermodynamica behandeld, en deze hoofdwet zal vervolgens uitgelegd worden. Als laatst wordt het concept van de thermodynamische cyclus of kringproces uitgelegd, waarbij van de ene naar de andere positie wordt gegaan en vervolgens weer terug.
